Winter Lawn Care Tips

Last updated 4 months ago

When your lawn is a dull brown color or covered with snow, it can be easy to forget how great it looks during the spring and summer. However, even when your lawn is not growing or is hidden by a blanket of snow, it requires care. Here are a few lawn care tips that you can use during the wintertime to ensure that your grass is lush and healthy in the spring:

  • Cut Lawn Slowly

When you are still mowing your lawn during the autumn months, change the setting on your mower to gradually lower the height of your grass. Cutting it short all at once can shock the grass, so it is important to change the cutting base only a small amount each time. When winter arrives, your lawn should not have any new growth, as this can make it more susceptible to disease.

  • Aerate and Fertilize

Before the first freeze of winter, provide your lawn with a final fertilization. This will prepare the grass for a robust regrowth during the spring months. You should also make sure that your lawn has been aerated before the first winter freeze to help reduce the buildup of thatch.

  •  Keep Lawn Clear

Remove any items, such as gardening tools, toys, and furniture, from your lawn at the beginning of winter. These items can easily be forgotten under the first snow fall, and can damage and kill the grass beneath them. You should also stop people from walking on your lawn during the winter. Areas that receive heavy foot traffic can be worn into paths that may not regrow in the spring.
