Adjusting Your Lawn and Garden Watering Schedule for Fall and Winter
The bad news: Summer is over. The good news: You don’t have to water your yard as much. However, that doesn’t mean you should stop watering your lawn and garden altogether—though rainfall may be more frequent during the fall and winter, it isn’t always enough to keep your plants healthy. Here’s a brief guide to adjusting your lawn and garden watering schedule for the cold months:
- How Seasons Affect Your Lawn
Every season is different. When it comes to taking care of your landscape during the fall and winter chill, you often have to roll with the punches. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the weather reports and water just before cold weather hits. It’s also very important that you water your yard only when the air temperature is above freezing and the soil is not frozen.
- How Often You Should Water
Though the cold months are full of fog, frost, and clouds, there’s a good chance that your landscape is not getting enough moisture. During the fall and winter, the wind is notoriously dry and can suck the moisture out of the soil in a hurry. That’s why it’s still important to water your garden and lawn.
Luckily, you don’t need to water your lawn three to four times a week like you do during the summer. The decrease in sunlight and increase in rainfall means that there’s usually more moisture in the soil. Still, to make absolutely sure that your landscape stays healthy, it’s a good idea to bring out the sprinklers for about 15 minutes once every three weeks.
